Renée Römkens is professor by special appointment of Gender Based Violence at the University of Amsterdam, Faculty of social and behavioural sciences. This is a chair by special appointment, supported by the Board of Trustees of Atria. Renée Römkens was CEO/Director of Atria untill 1 October 2019. She builds on extensive research expertise on gender based violence and national and international developments in socio-legal regulation (University of Amsterdam, Utrecht, New York University, Columbia University, University of Cape Town, University of the Western Cape, University Tilburg).
She has published widely and conducted European comparative research on legal and policy provisions in the field of gender based violence/ violence against women (for the EC and the Council of Europe) and is part of an expert group for EIGE (European Institute for Gender Equality). For the European Commission she regularly presents scientific advisory reports in the field of gender based violence in her capacity as expert-member of European Network on Gender Expertise (ENEGE).
Her current research focuses on the role of international law for national developments.
