- Time: 12:30
Angela Saini engages in conversation with feminist opinion makers during Atria’s F-lab on feminism and science. The F-lab is private, it will be streamed live on Atria’s Facebook.
Angela Saini
Angela Saini is a science journalist and author. She presents scientific programmes for BBC radio and her work has been published in New Scientist, Wired and The Economist, among others. Saini has received awards from the Association of British Science Writers and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In 2011 she released her debut, Geek Nation, a book on the transformation of India into a global scientific superpower. Her second book, Inferior: How Science Got Women Wrong and the New Research that’s Rewriting the Story was released in 2017. On February 9th, de Volkskrant published an interview with Saini on racism and science.
Inferior
Five different translations of Inferior are already under way. A Dutch version will be released on March 6. In Inferior, Saini exposes the subjective gaze of science: Saini demonstrates numerous cases of prejudice against women in scientific research in places you would least expect them. Saini then refutes the creeping assumption that women are intellectually inferior to men with overwhelming scientific evidence. Difference between the sexes is, above all else, culturally determined, Saini argues. The female scientific gaze is essential in that it makes the worldview of both men and women more complete.
Feminism and science
Angela Saini will be interviewed on the subjects of feminism and science by Amade M’Charek, professor of Anthropology of Science at the University of Amsterdam. Her scientific interest lies in forensic research, forensic anthropology and the subject of race and ethnicity. She especially focusses on the social connotations of biomedical technologies and practices. M’Charek is head of a research into the biologisation of Dutch identity and also participates as head of research in a study into the development of sexuality and diversity. Besides her scientific work, M’Charek is a member of Atria’s advisory board. Last autumn an interview with her was published in Vrij Nederland: ‘Ik verzet me tregen iedere simplificatie‘ (‘I resist every form of simplification’).
After the interview, participants will engage in a conversation with Angela Saini. The dialogue will be moderated by Eveline van Rijswijk, scientific editor and presenter.
Live stream F-lab
The live stream will be broadcast on Friday March 9, 12.30 through Facebook. The video will also be released on Atria’s YouTube channel a week later.
The F-lab is private. On Saturday March 10, Angela Saini will be visiting a public programme at De Balie
