Summary:
The text deals with SOS hotline for women and children victims of violence, relying on experiences with the first hotline in Yugoslavia established by feminist activists in Zagreb in 1988. The authors firstly provide theoretical explanations of violence in a society with an unequal division of power. Causes of male violence against women are patriarchy, patterns of dominance, tradition and unproductive lives. The second part of the text describes the practice of the first SOS hotline and counselling service, that was based on voluntary work and feminist theory of solidarity and empowerment. State institutions are seen as protective of the patriarchal social order, therefore an autonomous hotline is conceptualized as an alternative.
