Summary:
The political discourse on human reproduction and the character of institutional bioethics in Italy is, as Boccia and Zuffa have put it, a discourse that eclipses the mother. By emphasizing the concept of abstract life, the discourse relegates the woman as an intermediary figure used as a means of reproducing life; in doing so, female sovereignty over reproduction is denied. The impact of new biotechnologies has put into question to which (biological) entity these sphere of rights and liberties belong to. This issue has influenced the representation of motherhood through the media, the feminist debate and also the relationships between women and men.
