Summary:
The main thesis of the book is that Romania is more democratic for men than for women, and the simple existence of formal rights for women does not guarantee that they are exercised in reality. Liliana Popescu therefore argues that the differences (in terms of different experiences) between men and women are ignored in Romanian society and that this has a profound effect on citizenship and power relations. The book also focuses on issues like homosexuality, prostitution and pornography, less discussed in Romania.
