Publishing company De Bonte Was
This is a poster made by Feminist publisher De Bonte Was (Colored Wash) for a stand on the Emancipade, an event held from the 20th of May until the 8th of June 1975 in Utrecht. Foundation De Bonte Was was founded in 1974, and evolved from women’s discussion groups in the Women’s Center in Amsterdam. The women aimed to address all women by publishing books, leaflets, posters and picture postcards.
The Emancipade was organized within the framework of International Women’s Year 1975, proclaimed by the United Nations. Many women did not appreciate this proclamation. The action group Dolle Mina (Mad Mina) showed their disapproval by creating a poster with the text: ‘Not a year, but a life for women!‘.
