Library of IIAV (predecessor of Atria), 2000, photographer: Liesbeth Sluiter, Collection IAV-Atria
Atria's library collection comprises some 120,000 books, brochures, reports, dissertations, theses, journals and articles on gender equality and women's movements, as well as sheet music by female composers. The material is mainly in Dutch and English.

The library collection is highly diverse, ranging from leading academic publications in gender studies and gender history to popular publications focusing on gender equality. There is a rich collection of feminist magazines, many of which are self-published, such as Flamboyant, Lover, and Ashanti. We also have the commemorative book of the demonstration for women's suffrage on 18 June 1916 and De vrouw. Haar bouw en haar inwendige organen (Women: Their Structure and Internal Organs) by Aletta Jacobs. There is also a collection of unique, unpublished material that has had a significant historical impact on gender equality, such as (research) reports, magazines, brochures, dissertations, and theses.

In recent years, more and more digital publications have been included that can be read directly online.

Study room

The study room is open Tuesday to Thursday, 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Address: Vijzelstraat 20, 1017 HK Amsterdam.

You can visit by appointment to borrow books and consult theses, journals and sheet music. On your first visit, Atria's information specialists will be happy to show you around.

Requesting and viewing materials

Books, theses and sheet music can be viewed in the library. It is possible – provided the condition allows – to have articles from magazines and sheet music scanned. This is only possible if the scan is for personal use.

Borrow books

With a subscription, books, notes and reports published after 1950 can be borrowed, with the exception of unique and fragile material and theses. An annual subscription costs €29. Students pay €10 for the first year.

Donating materials

Atria mainly collects Dutch-language publications on gender equality and the history of women's movements: books, but also other forms of publication such as magazines, brochures, photographs, objects and posters. We are very interested in theses, brochures, reports and other unpublished material. We are particularly interested in material about black, migrant and refugee women.

An appointment must always be made before donating materials. On this page of the collection site, you will find more information about the materials we do not accept. You can contact us using the form below.
