Many organisations, when dealing with citizens, consumers or employees, ask for the sex of the person they are dealing with. In some cases, organisations are required to make this sex registration or it may be relevant. In many cases, however, sex registration is taken for granted without good reasons. We then speak of unnecessary sex registration.
In practice, a lack of awareness, knowledge and technical barriers can stand in the way of abolishing unnecessary sex registration. Based on input from Marjolein van den Brink and Jet Tigchelaar(UCERF, Utrecht University), Atria and Transgender Network have developed the Toolkit unnecessary sex registration to inspire organisations and offer practical solutions.
The toolkit consists of an interactive consideration framework and a guide for each sector: national government, municipalities and companies. The toolkit explains the reasons for reducing sex registration, in which cases it is relevant or even mandatory, alternatives and good practices. The assessment framework helps you by means of concrete questions to identify and tackle sex registration within your organisation.
