The female body graphically depicted
The first female doctor in the Netherlands was the well-known Dr. Aletta Henriëtte Jacobs (1854-1929). She established herself as a general practicioner at the Herengracht in Amsterdam in 1879.
In 1898, she published a book entitled ‘De vrouw, haar bouw en haar inwendige organen. Aanschouwelijk voorgesteld door beweegbare platen en met geïllustreerden, verklarenden tekst. Een populaire schets’ (‘Woman, Her Structure and Internal Organs. Graphically represented by moving prints, and with illustrated, explanatory text. A popular outline’).
Through this book, women were able to learn about their bodies and its functions. It was a comprehensible book, without any excessive Latin terms. It went through six editions. Atria’s library holds a copy from the third edition (printed in 1900) and a copy from the fourth edition (printed in 1910).
